Favorite Running Tips

I LOVE running! Here are some thoughts and running tips which may help you enjoy it like I do!

• Always have some goals in mind and work for them
• Find a buddy to run with!...dogs work too!
• Subscribe to Runner’s World magazine.
• No, you are not a wimp if you have to walk
• Buy powdered Gatorade for summer running…its cheaper!
• Yes, many runners DO drink soft drinks…there are worse vices!
• You are not the ONLY one who has trouble getting up in the mornings!
• Running tips are just tips….not set in stone!
• Never raced before? Go WATCH a race before signing up. You’ll know what to expect then.
• Got a side cramp? Think about something else for a minute. They go away!
• Running tips 101…take them all with a few grains of salt. Tips which work for me may not work for you!
• Check your cable guide for running events…very inspiring!
• If hills hurt your hamstrings, don’t do them! Running hills is a common running tip, but they are not required to be a good runner.
• Spend at least SOME time running on dirt or grass.
• It is normal for your lower abs to be sore from running at first.
• So what if you run a 30 minute 5k…how many people can say at least that!
• Cross-training- Mix plenty of walking, light weights, cycling, swimming in with your running
• If you had real good run today, take tomorrow off!
• Forget the 10% rule of increasing your distance per week! Make the 10% per month! Your body will respond much better.
• Think of your goals in terms of months and years and not weeks!
• Allow yourself the joy of long runs! Once per week do a slow, long run. It should be at least 50% longer than your intense speed or interval workouts. Long runs build endurance and are very therapeutic!
• Go to a track which has a measured distance and run the pace you need to run in order to reach your goal for whatever race you are training for. 4 laps is a mile. Train your body to that speed!
• Carbs are good for runners! In other words, carbs are great for runners! Protein alone does not make a great runner.

The best tip of all: Cultivate and strive for the “Runner’s High”. Mine comes about 30 minutes after a good run. It does not always happen, but when it does, I feel like Superman!

Good luck to you and happy running!
