Do your palms start to sweat when you don’t see the newspaper in your driveway? Do you grab for your paper before you grab for your coffee? Do you read it cover to cover? Are you addicted to your newspaper?
Many of us feel like we are having withdrawal if we don’t get our daily news fix. And although we could turn on the television and find ten news stations at any given time, or turn on our computer and find thousands of news stories to read, it’s just not the same as grabbing a cup of java, sitting at the table and reading the paper from cover to cover.
Perhaps it’s like a good book or a fine glass of wine. You’ve just got to touch it and hold it. There’s nothing quite as satisfying as reading the funnies or looking at the stock market page. Perhaps even though we consider ourselves hi tech savvy there’s just a little bit of old school tradition in us that makes us want to actually read the newspaper.
Whatever the reason the advent of the internet as not slowed down newspaper circulation. In fact each year the number of people that subscribe to one or more newspapers continues to grow. And that’s good news for the paper industry, the printing industry, and the people that work in those industries.
After all the paper keeps a lot of people employed. From the journalist who writes the top story, to the columnist who gives you advice, to the sports editor who feeds you the days scores, to the cartoonist who makes you laugh, to the genius the puts together that difficult crossword puzzle.
And that’s just the start of it. There the printers, the delivery personal, the clerical staff, the advertising reps, the print setters, the type setters, and the list goes on and on. So there are quite literally hundreds of thousands of people that aren’t going to be upset if you continue to enjoy your daily paper. After all you could say their livelihood depends on it.
Some of us are skimmers glancing through the pages getting a glimpse of the day’s news. Other’s read the paper cover to cover, story by story, page by page. If you were to quiz them on it they’d ace it every time. No matter your reading style you are certain to walk away from your paper with some food for thought.
Did that natural disaster story make your heart sink. Did you spend the morning trying to figure out what you could do to help? Were you all of a sudden motivated to hold a fund raiser?
Or how about that sports team of yours. Did you walk away feeling elated because they kicked butt last night? Did it give you a morning high to know there was still hope for your team? And what a great debate you are going to have at work today.
Did that crossword puzzle drive you to have a second cup of coffee? Are you still trying to figure out what word goes in 7 down. Perhaps you can ask your co-worker for ideas.
However the newspaper affects you, the one thing is for certain, it gives you food for thought, it opens up your horizons, it fills you in on local and global affairs, and it keeps you feeling in touch. So the next time someone asks you if you are addicted to your newspaper, you can proudly answer “yes.” .
