The Catamount Trail which encompasses 300 miles in Vermont is one of the best ways to explore what the great outdoors has to offer. It’s offers perfect winter and summer opportunities and covers the entire length of the state.

There are 26 sectors to the 300 mile Catamount Trail. Each sector can be usually covered in a full day. It offers a nice mix of pristine wilderness with packed trails and it has several access points along the way.

You can access Catamount Trail from Hazen’s in Montgomery, Craftsbury Nordic Center, Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe, Bolton Valley Ski Center, Blueberry Hill in Goshen, and Mountain Top in Chittenden to name just a few of the access points.

The Catamount Trail came into existence because 3 Vermont citizens had the foresight and vision to design a ski trail that would allow people to ski the entire length of Vermont. The vision began back in 1984 by incorporating existing ski trails, working deals with private land owners, using old logging roads, as well as hiking and snowmobile trails.

Actually cross country skiing is popular throughout the entire state of Vermont. It’s one of the oldest winter recreations of the state next to snowshoeing which also remains popular today. Snowmobiling is also very popular in Vermont.

After all this is a very magical state with exceptional scenery and wilderness, and what better way to enjoy it than through cross country skiing, snowshoeing, or snowmobiling. From snow covered mountain tops to pristine valleys it’s hard to beat!

Besides the Catamount Trail there are more than 3900 miles of other trails within Vermont so there’s some serious exploration that can be done here! The past 30 years have brought an ever increasing interest in getting up close and personal with mother nature during those nippy winter months.

Snowmobilers enjoy some amazing trails that are well marked and have fuel, food, and accommodations along the way. They are well mapped so be sure to grab a map before heading off on the trails. The trails are designed for easy access from a variety of points across the state of Vermont. All you need is your trail pass.

If you aren’t ready to head out exploring on your own, why not consider one of the many snowmobile tours offered. There’s a terrific mix of tour operators that offer up some terrific snowmobiling tours whether you’re looking to explore the forest or wide open spaces. You pick!
