Dangers of Too Much Rain

The weather is something that is unpredictable and it can literally change in a matter of minutes. Rain is a common weather element that has it advantages and disadvantages. Rain is needed to water crops and keep our environment healthy; however, too much rain can be dangerous and potentially deadly.

For many areas of the world it can rain at just about any time of the year. In other areas the cold weather often turns the would be liquid precipitation into snow. There are others areas of the world that are subject to more rainfall when compared to others.

Areas that regularly receive a large amount of rain are generally always prepared for the danger that comes along with too much rain; however, many other areas are unprepared. It is not uncommon for too much rain to cause flooding. Flooding can cause injury or death to humans or animals and a large amount of property damage. Individuals who live in an area that is prone to flooding are likely to have an emergency flood plan.

Although there are some areas of the world that are more prone to floods than others, a large amount of rain can fall just about anywhere and at anytime. This often leaves many individuals and their homes in danger if a large amount of rain causes a flood. All flooding is dangerous; however, flashfloods are more deadly because they often develop with little or no warning at all.

In addition to flooding, it is possible for mud or landslides to develop. Mudslides occur when the ground becomes muddy or too soft and it begins to give away. Landslides and mudslides typically occur in hilly or mountain areas.

Mudslides and landslides are dangerous because there may be homes on a hillside side. When a landslide occurs from too much rain the hill will actually begin to fall and a portion of it will collapse. A home that is located in a slide zone is likely to be completely destroyed. Any individuals or animals located inside the home during a mudslide are at risk for being seriously injured or killed.

In addition to landslides and flooding, a large amount of rainfall can damage local farms. Rain is needed to keep plants and other important crops healthy; however, too much rainfall can permanently damage them. Farmers who are unable to profit from the sale of their damaged crops run the risk of a financial loss and it can also hurt their local economy.

Rain is something that can not be prevented; however, many meteorologists are able to predict where a rain or thunderstorm may occur. Although the exact amount of rain from a particular storm can’t be predicted there are many meteorologists who are able to give a close estimate. Listening to weather reports is a great way for many individuals to prepare for the potential dangers that can arise from too much rain.
