National Heroes: Who Are They?

There are a lot of different factors that go into deciding who is a national hero. There are many individuals who put their lives on the line each day to protect their country or their community. Many individuals feel that their hero is their favorite sports player, but in reality a large number of them did not do anything to be considered a national hero.

A hero is most often defined by a action that they did that was considered outstanding or extraordinary. Many individuals have label Martian Luther King Jr. or Rosa Parks national heroes because of the steps that they took to ensure equality among all races. In addition the two of them there are other historical national heroes that fought for a cause that benefited the American public in one way or another.

After the attacks on the World Trade Center there was an extra awareness of the sacrifices that firefighters and police officers make on a daily basis. In a way Americans always new these individuals were faced with danger, but it wasn’t always apparent just how great that danger really could be. These individuals as a whole group are often considered national heroes.

To prevent another horrific event like September 11th from occurring the United States has waged a war on terrorism. That war took the United States to Iraq and Afghanistan. Thousands of individuals from all different branches of the military are fighting a deadly war. That deadly war is not only claming the lives of wonderful men and women, but it is also leaving a large number of men and women injured.

Those returning home from war are often faced with life altering injuries. These injuries not only often leave a military personnel to be unable to serve in the military, but it also leaves many troops unable to get traditional jobs. These types of individuals are true national heroes.

It is sad to say, but many Americans do not realize that military troops are national heroes. Many citizens who are opposed to the war are taking out their frustrations on the troops that are over seas. In fact there have even been multiple reports of anti-war protesters protesting at the funerals of fallen soldiers.

Not all, but many, anti-war supporters fail to realize that the American troops are just doing their job. If they were to work for a company that tests their products on animals should they automatically be labeled as an animal abuser. Most people would say no and the same theory should be applied to the troops serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Since September 11th the United States has been lucky with not experiencing another terrorist attack. Many individuals and lawmakers feel that it is because of the United States troop presence and high surveillance in Afghanistan and Iraq. While the two may or not be directly related there are still millions of military troops who go to work each day not willing to take the chance of finding out the hard way. Those men and women are true national heroes.
