Skin Tag Removal – Causes And Treatments

By: Sarah Bais

Skin tags are experienced by many people but there is little understanding about what they really are and their impact on the human health. You must know a few things about them if you decide to go for a skin tag removal. You also must know that there are treatments you can use if you are affected by multiple skin tags.

First, let’s understand what is a skin tag. A small skin growth or a tumor that appear on the skin is called a skin tag. When watching closely, you will see how the skin tag is attached to the skin through a tissue that is a few millimetres thick. This tissue is made of peduncles and it usually is the same color as the skin around or slightly darker. Skin tags appear on many places, like the neck, the armpits, the eyelids, under the breasts or in the genital area.

In the medical terminology, they are called acrochordons, that are generally not bad for a person’s health, but that could grow into a dangerous cancerous symptom.

Studies have shown that some people are more affected than others by skin tags. For instance, obese people tend to have more skin tags than the others. The explanation is that an obese person has more skin folds where skin tags can occur. Also pregnant women are more subject to skin tags, because of the same reason. Skin folds have a large incidence in older people, so skin tags are not unknown from a certain age. Researchers found out that the genes can be held responsible for the occurrence of the skin tags, as gender, too, women being more affected by such a thing.

Rarely, these skin tags endanger the person’s health. But they are extremely unaesthetic and unpleasant to watch. If the skin tag is in a hidden area, it is not a big deal, but if someone experiences many and ugly skin tags especially in areas that can not be that easily covered, like the eyelids, they can become a problem of appearance and, therefore, self esteem.

These people have an indisputable desire to remove the skin tags. Another reason for getting the skin tags removed relates to the feeling of discomfort they can provide. Many skin tags appear in the folds of the skin, on the neck or under the armpits, where the skin comes in close contact with the clothing. When friction takes place, the skin gets irritated and the person feels uncomfortable. This reduces the possibility of movement or of practicing sports.

Skin tag removal is possible and there are treatments when it comes to such a decision. One treatment involves the skin tag to be frozen through means of cryotherapy. The skin tag can be burnt off through cauterization. Another solution is stopping the alimentation with blood of the skin tag by binding the peduncle. In several weeks, it usually dies. Surgery is also an option. This can be done in a clinic by a specialist that uses scissors or a scalpel to remove the skin tag.
