Russia's upper house of parliament has voted unanimously for a resolution calling on President Dmitry Medvedev to recognise Georgia's breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent states. The Federation Council voted 130 for the resolution with none against. Both houses of the Russian parliament are scheduled to discuss the situation in South Ossetia and Abkhazia at extraordinary sessions today.
