Whenever someone hears Detroit they automatically thing of the automotive industry, and justly so as this is the industry that built the city into the 6th largest metropolis in the U.S. It is a gem of a city that has plenty to offer especially if you are a car buff! So why not plan a trip to Detroit?
Don’t be scared off by the somewhat run down downtown area. This is largely a result of the decline in the auto industry and the lost revenue to the city. The downtown core is actually a fascinating place to visit with its old world architecture, art deco skyscrapers, empty parking lots, and partially demolished buildings. Some of the buildings still hint of the grandeur of the old Detroit. One of those buildings in the General Motors Building built in 1922 which at the time was the largest corporate office complex in the US.
By contrast is the glistening shiny Renaissance Center which consists of 4 modern 39 story office towers and a 73 story hotel tower. If you visit the observation deck in the hotel tower you’ll get a spectacular view of the city right across the river to Windsor. You might even consider a meal in the revolving restaurant.
So what to do while in Detroit? Detroit is a historical car buffs dream vacation spot. First stop should be the Henry Ford Museum which was founded in 1926 by Henry Ford himself as the Edison Institute, now known as the Henry Ford Museum and the biggest museum in the US.
Here you’ll find a remarkable large collection of cars that show the history of the auto in America with over 100 years of history. It starts with the French and German inventions and goes through to the Japanese Import car. There are Fords as well as many other makers’ cars on display here including the original beetle.
Another exhibition will walk you through the life of Henry Ford, while another will show you how appliances have changed the lives of Americans in the past centuries. There are also planes and trains on display.
Across from the street is the Greenfield Village is a historical village complete with historical structures dating as far back as the 17th century. There are even houses that belonged to some very famous Americans like Orville and Wilbur Wright. It’s a must see
Be sure not to miss the Detroit Automotive Hall of Fame! It draws car buffs from around the globe. It’s the exhibition center for the world’s auto industry. Besides featuring cars it also is home to interactive exhibits where you can design your own car or meet the people behind the auto industry. Time flies while you’re here so be sure to give yourself lots of time to see all the exhibits.
While in Detroit be sure to visit the Historical Museum located in downtown. Here you can explore Detroit’s history right back to Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac through the industrial development of the city, and into modern times. You can even walk through the streets of Old Detroit and explore the 19th century shops. It’s a must to visit!!
The Detroit Institute of Arts is home to more than 100 galleries and over 70,000 works of art. From Mummies, to Asian Antiquities, to the Impressionist works. Here you’ll find some of Rembrandt’s and Van Gough’s masterpieces as well as many other famous artists’ works. Located in downtown Detroit be sure to visit it!
And if you have an interest in music be sure to visit the Motown Historical Museum where you can see the original recording studio for start like Diana Ross and Jackson Five. It’s even home to some of the stars costumes from that era. Don’t miss it!
If you’re a car buff that loves sports then make sure you take in a game or two at one of the stadiums or parks. Visit Comerica Park or Tiger Stadium and perhaps catch a Detroit Redwings or Detroit Tigers game.
And when you’re ready for a night on the town, maybe a game of poker, or take your chances on a slot machine then be sure to visit the MGM Grand Casino. You can grab a bite to eat and try your luck.
Detroit might have been built on the auto industry but there’s a new emerging Detroit that’s got plenty to offer everyone and especially the car buffs!
