Regency Chrome Mirrors

By: Joanne Dorin

When you need an auto part, the last thing you want to do is search for days only to find that your part is simply no longer in existence. This is extremely frustrating. I had this happen with some Regency chrome mirrors. This may seem like a laughable matter, but I guarantee you that it is not a laughing matter. I had been searching for what seemed like years - more likely a few hours - for that one part. Not that the part wasn't working, but I had lost that mini-mirror inside of the bigger mirror on the drivers side. I liked having the mini-mirror. However, I think what I disliked most was the fact that it left a nasty ring where it used to be and it didn't match the other side. My choices were (A) rip off the other mini-mirror so I was even, or (B) purchase a new mirror.

Regency chrome mirrors sound like they would be easy to find. Call of Oldsmobile and order that part. Boy, was I ever wrong! For one, Oldsmobile no longer produces Regency. In fact, Oldsmobile no longer exists. Okay, this did pose a slight problem, but I was guided by the misconception that I could find anything with a little hard work and the Internet. After all, I was talking about a single mirror, not something difficult.

I started by calling all of the local salvage yards in my local area. I was astounded to find that not one of them had the part I was wanting. However, I did talk to one salvage yard that offered to put me on a waiting list. I said no thank you and then spent the next few hours contemplating the total morbidity of going on a waiting list for a salvage car part. I had images of "dirty" salvage yards actually causing people to wreck so they could get my mirror and for some reason, the thought disturbed me. Why would they want to make a waiting list for car parts? We may never know.

Of course, I did find my part, but it took me spending a lot more money and time than I want to admit. I didn't know shipping on one item could be so expensive. Regency chrome mirrors sure are not the easiest thing to find; they sure are expensive. In hindsight, I am still disturbed by a salvage yard waiting list.
